Line an 8x8 inch baking dish with parchment paper. In a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, melt dark chocolate until smooth. Stir in Β½ tsp peppermint extract.
Remove from heat. Let cool slightly, then spread half the mixture into the pan. Sprinkle half the crushed peppermint candies over layer and gently press into chocolate. Pour remaining melted dark chocolate and spread evenly. Let set in fridge 15 minutes.
Melt white chocolate separately. Spread over dark chocolate layer, leaving Β½ inch of space around edges. Press remaining crushed candies and optional mix-ins like candy canes or nuts evenly across the surface.
Refrigerate for 1-2 hours until firm. Break into pieces and serve. Store in airtight container up to 2 weeks.
