Place cubed sweet potatoes in a large pot. Add enough water to cover and bring to boil. Cook 10-12 minutes until tender.
In a large bowl, mash potatoes with butter, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until smooth.
In a small bowl, mix pecan pieces with brown sugar and melted butter.
Spread mashed potatoes in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Evenly distribute the pecan topping over the top.
